SR

Siti Rohana bt. Hamzah

Georgetown, Penang — April 2025

I came to the one-day session not knowing what to expect. My documents were in three different drawers and two folders that had no system at all. By the afternoon I had everything in labelled sections and a sheet that tells me exactly where each document type lives. It was practical in a way I had not anticipated. My daughter was relieved when she saw the folder.

One-Day Records Session

Tan Kok Wai

Bayan Lepas, Penang — March 2025

The literacy course was not what I expected — in a good way. I thought it would be someone lecturing about retirement planning. Instead it was a reading group where we worked through the actual EPF publications together. I finally understand how the statements are laid out and where to find the numbers I was always confused by. The discussion leader was patient and never pushed any particular interpretation.

Rajamani & Nirmala

Butterworth, Penang — April 2025

We signed up for the couples programme because my husband and I had never sat down together to go through our paperwork. Rajendran came to our home and we spent the morning going through everything we had. By the end of the session, we had a shared system both of us understood. The follow-up sessions during the year helped us keep it updated when things changed. The folder at the end of the year is something we are glad to have.

Ahmad Barawi bin Idris

Air Itam, Penang — May 2025

I was hesitant at first because I was not sure whether the one-day session would be worthwhile for a single day. It was. The structure of the morning helped me deal with documents I had been avoiding — particularly some older insurance receipts I was not sure I still needed. I came away with a folder system and a records map that is now on my desk at home.

One-Day Records Session

Lim Mei Yee

Tanjung Bungah, Penang — March 2025

The literacy course moved at a comfortable pace. I had already tried to read the EPF materials on my own but found some of the terminology confusing. Working through them with a small group and a discussion leader made the structure much clearer. I would have liked a seventh session — there were materials we did not finish — but six weeks is a reasonable period to commit to.

Cheong Kwong Seng & Wife

Bukit Mertajam, Penang — May 2025

What I appreciated was that they were very clear about what the programme does not do. There was no attempt to suggest we do anything with our records beyond organising them. That suited us. We wanted a system, not advice. The home visit was useful — Rajendran could see what we actually had and built the folder structure around that rather than assuming.

How three households worked through the process

The Challenge

Documents in too many places

A retired civil servant from Balik Pulau had twenty years of EPF statements in physical mail, some in digital files, and no idea which account nomination forms were current. His adult children were asking to be shown where important documents were kept, and he had no clear answer.

What Happened

One-day session, systematic inventory

He attended the one-day session bringing a bag of unsorted documents. The facilitator walked the group through a category-by-category inventory. By early afternoon his documents were sorted into six labelled sections. He identified three documents he needed to update and added them to a separate list for follow-up outside the session.

The Outcome

A folder his family can use

He left with a complete labelled folder structure and a personal records map. Three months later he attended the couples programme with his wife. In his written feedback he noted that his family now knows where everything is, which had been his main concern.

"I had been telling myself I would sort through everything for years. The one-day session gave me a reason to actually do it, and the structure meant I was not just shuffling things around."

The Challenge

Statements she could not interpret

A retired teacher from Penang Hill had been receiving her EPF statements for decades but was unsure what most of the figures referred to. She was not comfortable asking for professional advice on something she felt she should already understand.

What Happened

Six-session reading group

She enrolled in the six-session literacy course. The group worked through the EPF member guide and several SOCSO publications over six weeks. The discussion leader explained how each section of a statement was formatted and which official publications described each figure. By week four, she was able to read her own statement without assistance.

The Outcome

Familiarity with her own records

She completed the course and reported that she now reads her statements as they arrive rather than storing them unopened. She kept all her course materials and has consulted the official publications on her own since completing the course.

"I used to feel embarrassed that I could not read my own retirement statements. The reading group format took that pressure away — we were all working through the same material together."
